A minimal, pastel and dreamy illustration series based on the symbols of the zodiac is in the works. I'm not focusing on the constellations or the personality traits of the signs, but rather the history and meaning of the characters and animals associated with them. For instance, the symbol for Gemini (above) is often depicted as a pair of random female twins, but historically they were thought of as Pollux and Castor, a pair of step-brothers from Greek mythology.
Virgo is a virgin maiden associated with the harvest – either Demeter or Perthenos depending on who's telling the story. Aquarius is Ganymede, a handsome teenage boy that Zeus fancied – so he stole him and made his cup bearer, as you do. Scorpio is... well, a scorpion. With each symbol I study I gain a better understanding not just of the zodiac and astrology, but also astronomy, mythology and ancient religion. It's great fun!
